Arrangement

This collection is arranged topically and chronologically.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains legal documents, business records, and correspondence from four generations of the Ray, Griffith, and House families of Prairie County, Ark. Two men in this family, one in the first generation and one in the third generation, are named Richard Bogan Ray. They are distinguished in the finding aid by notations of the first (1st) or the second (2nd). Each of these men was known in the community by the name of Bogan. The bulk of the material in the collection relates to Mary Ray Griffith, her first husband, George Ray, her second husband, C. A. (Clayborn) Griffin, and her children.

Biographical Information

Richard Bogan Ray (1st) was born February 20, 1813, in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Ray on October 23, 1833. They had a number of children, including Euphema (Peny), born ca 1844, Benton, born ca 1850, and George, born in December 1851. The family lived for many years in McNairy County, Tennessee; a land document from that location is included in this collection. In about 1869, the family moved to Prairie County, Arkansas. Richard Bogan Ray (1st) died there on December 27, 1890.

George Ray was born in December 1851 in McNairy County, Tennessee. He married Mary A. Clark on January 22, 1888, at Hazen, Ark. Mary was born in Prairie County, Ark., on June 6, 1869, to Marshall and Temperance Clark. George and Hazel had two children, Mabel and Richard Bogan (2nd). George died October 16, 1908, and on March 14, 1909, Mary married C. A. (Clayborn) Griffith (born in 1869 in Shelby County, Tennessee). Mary died October 8, 1941, and C. A. Griffith died October 26, 1944.

Mabel Ray was born to George and Mary in May 1889. She married Tom Felts in December 1905, and in 1908 they had a son named Aubrey. The couple divorced in 1910, and the divorce agreement is included in this collection. In September 1916, Mabel married Ben House, a widower with four children. A school paper from Ben’s daughter Ruie is included in the collection. Mabel and Ben had a son named Ray, who served with Gen. Patton in World War II. He was later an officer in the Arkansas National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

Richard Bogan Ray (2nd) was born August 22, 1892, at Hazen, Ark. After attending Draughans Business College in Little Rock, he worked for United Shoe Stores in Shreveport, Louisiana. He died October 15, 1963, in Louisiana and is buried at Oakland Cemetery, DeVall’s Bluff, Ark.
